Rantie’s brace sinks Nigeria!

Bafana Bafana has denied reigning African champions, Nigeria an opportunity to defend their title. Mashaba’s boys were however unlucky not to have walked away with a win against a team whom they last beat in 2004.

Tokelo Rantie’s two goals in each half silenced the Nigerians in a packed AkwaIbom National stadium at Uyo, but the Super Eagles fought back to snatch a draw in the dying moments of the game with Sone Aluko’s brace.

Mashaba believes that Nigeria were lucky to salvage a draw against his spirited troops.

“It’s a question of luck we should have beaten them at home in the 0-0 draw and this one as well. For them to come back in the last five minute of referee’s optional time shows that Nigeria have a little bit of extra luck against us,” said Bafana mentor.

Bafana finished the game with ten men after Reneilelwe Letsholonyane picked up his second yellow card shortly after Aluko’s goal, leaving the visitors to hold on for nervy 20 minutes ,which most belonged to the Super Eagles.

Meanwhile Bafana Bafana captain Dean Furman has praised coach Shakes Mashaba for installing pride back to the team.“He’s been excellent for us, he’ installed the pride in us and I thank you saw it in the pitch today the way the boys are willing to put their heads on the line for our country, we are fighting for every ball. We want to core every goal and as a unit we have a much focused group”, he said.

“We planned to keep Nigeria at bay in the opening 20 minute. We knew that it would happen, that they would break down. That’s why when we got two goals,Nigeria didn’t know what to do because they were frustrated,” Mashaba added.

Bafana Bafana qualified together with Congo-Brazzaville in group A, who beat Sudan 1-0 in Khartoum.
